The Thalia alternating Single-Use-Exchanger

Thalia fluid exchanging features

Thalia is an alternating (pulsating, bi-directional, reciprocating) fluid exchanger and part of the CellRetention Perfusion-SUB package.

The super compact Clotho Drive Unit gives Thalia its unique performance. Clotho measures via the Laser sensor accurately in real-time the position of the free-flowing elastic diaphragm. The result is an Air-Operated-Diaphragm-Positive-Displacement (AODPD) Alternating-Single-Use-Exchanger (A-SUE) with non-parallel performance and capabilities.

Thalia technical functionality:

  • The Alternating-Single-Use-Exchanger (A-SUE) feature a position controlled free-floating diaphragm
  • Thalia do not convey fluid as a typical pump – but exchange forth and back the desired, programmed fluid volume
  • Thalia A-SUE is integrated with, connected directly to the Hollow-Fiber-Filter (HFF) module
  • Thalia feature the re-usable Laser sensor for outstanding performance
  • The high precision Laser sensor measures constantly and accurate the position of the diaphragm, allowing Clotho to display desired exchanged broth volumes and velocities in real-time
  • Thalia exchange any fluid volume ranging within its size and from 0 to +10 m/sec broth velocity through the HFF module

Photos illustrate Thalia-30 and Thalia-100. The black “Laser Support Thalia” (LST-100) supports both the SUE cell and the red Laser sensor.

User features are:

  • Thalia handle fluids = liquids and gases in any mix
  • Thalia easily sucks fluids from low arranged bioreactors
  • Thalia is a metering pump = PD (Positive Displacement) pump = 1% accurate liquid mass-flow
  • Thalia A-SUE do NOT need any mass-flow sensor to measure mass-flow
  • Thalia do NOT need calibration like peristaltic pumps
  • Thalia do NOT loose nano size silicone particles to the fluid like peristaltic pumps
  • Thalia is both an Alternating and Pulsating fluid exchanger allowing new dynamics around avoiding HFF deposits via accurately controlled volumes and velocities

Sanitary couplings currently used for connecting Thalia to the HFF.

Thalia Alternating-Single-Use-Exchanger (A-SUE) is unique and absolute latest and most advanced AODPD in the market for biopharma purposes. Thalia specifications:

The basics in operation is copied from the human heart functionality:

  • Cardiac Output (CO) = total pumped volume, SUE capacity, mL/min (CO = BpM x SV)
  • Beats-per-Minute (BpM) = ranging 0 - 30 BpM, SUE diameter/stroke/volume depending
  • Stroke Volume (SV) = programmable from 10 - 100% of SUE cell specification
